Biography.

In June of 2006, District Attorney Tony Rackauckas was reelected to his third term with 100 percent of the votes. Mr.Rackauckas was previously elected Orange County District Attorney in 1998 and again in 2002 by overwhelming margins. As a deputy district attorney from 1972-1988, he tried more than 40 homicide cases and well over 100 felony trials. Tony served nine years on the Orange County Bench – three years as a Municipal Court Judge and six years as a Superior Court Judge. During his first seven years as District Attorney, Mr. Rackauckas has made reducing gang crimes his first priority. Under his leadership and focus, gang membership has been reduced by more than 8500 members and there are 55 less gangs in Orange County today. Mr. Rackauckas has successfully prosecuted major oil companies and mandated cleanup of over 300 gas stations in the County. He has added resources to prosecute “white collar” crimes such as identity theft, workers’ compensation and medical insurance fraud. He leads an office that prosecutes more than 70,000 cases a year with a felony conviction rate of over 90 percent. He has done all of this without increasing the budget for the office. A life long believer in public service, Tony also served as a paratrooper in the United States Army 101st Airborne Division (1962-1964). He graduated from California State University at Long Beach and Loyola Marymount University’s Law School.
